A case of beginner’s luck or hard work finally paying off? Whatever the reason for their success, first-timers Hazel Towers and Simply Smart certainly impressed by running away with a resounding win at Blair Castle Equi-Trek International Horse Trials in the CCI3* class. The pair led the competition after a clear cross-country round and, despite a fence down in the showjumping, held on to the top spot.
Affectionately described as a ‘nightmare bog pony’, Simply Smart has shown that you don’t need to be a flashy Thoroughbred or Warmblood to be successful in the upper levels of eventing. What the horse does have in spades is attitude: from losing her dam at 8 weeks old, to now success at one of Britain’s great competitions, the horse has certainly proven herself to be a fighter.
‘Winning this class means everything…all the hard work has paid off’ said Hazel. ‘My goal was just to get round and come home safe’ – well you two certainly achieved that!
